TRAVELING EXHIBITION: Heated Commutation / Contemporary Encaustic
Heated Exchange features the seductive surface, luminous color, and ethereal image layering unique to the encaustic medium. Each artist approaches the process from a distinct perspective that may incorporate scraping, called-for, burnishing, incising, dipping, dyeing, or pouring, as well as painting, printmaking, cartoon, collage, sculpture, or installation. While diverse in approach, numerous conceptual links connect our involvement in this malleable textile. Buried images, fragmented hybrids, or hidden codes of natural and industrial order, all translate into works infused with a physically poetic beauty. The exhibition resonates with sensual materiality. The aromatic scent of honeyed beeswax is an intoxicating perfume. Tactile surfaces reveal unique traces of the mitt, while gleaming color fused with intricate markings orchestrate striking visual chords.
Once an obsolete technique, encaustic (hot wax) is now recognized both for its exquisite beauty and incredible versatility. The artists Kim Bernard, Kristy Deetz, Peter Dykhuis, Lorraine Glessner, Cheryl Goldsleger, Reni Gower, Heather Harvey, Jeffrey Hirst, Laura Moriarty, and Jane Allen Nodine are among those who helped turn this legendary pigment of the Fayum mummy portraits into a mainstream gimmicky medium.
Kim Bernard shows her sculpture, installations and encaustic works nationally and has been featured in many exhibits, some of which include the Portland Museum of Art, Currier Museum of Art, Fuller Craft Museum, Colby Higher Museum of Art, Art Circuitous Museum and UNH Museum of Art. Bernard gives presentations, lectures and workshops nationally as a visiting artist and is currently an Artist-in-Residence in the Physics Department at Harvard University.
Kristy Deetz is a Professor of Art & Design at the Academy of Wisconsin-Green Bay. She received her MFA in painting and drawing from The Ohio State Academy. Her extensive exhibition record includes competitive, invitational, and solo exhibitions throughout the United States. She frequently gives workshops at recognized art centers such every bit Haystack, Anderson Ranch, OxBow, Penland, and Arrowmont. During her contempo breather she traveled to Italian republic to study the paintings of Renaissance artist, Piero della Francesca.
Peter Dykhuis is an internationally exhibiting visual artist and disquisitional writer. Formerly a resident of Toronto, he has lived and practiced in Halifax, Nova Scotia since 1991. He is currently the Director and Curator of the Dalhousie Art Gallery at Dalhousie University and was the one-time Director of the Anna Leonowens Gallery at the Nova Scotia Higher of Art and Blueprint.
Lorraine Glessner received her MFA in Fibers from Tyler Schoolhouse of Fine art where she is currently an Banana Professor. She also holds a BS in Textile Pattern from Philadelphia University and an Associate'due south Degree in Estimator Graphics from Moore College of Art and Design. Her piece of work has been exhibited widely and she has been awarded a number of significant awards including two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Fellowships.
Cheryl Goldsleger exhibits internationally and has been included in exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery, the Krannert Museum, the Montclair Museum, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, the National Academy of Sciences, the New Orleans Museum and the Virginia Museum. Her artworks are in the collections of Albright Knox Gallery, The Baltimore Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Fogg Museum, The High Museum, the Israel Museum, MoMA and the Tel Aviv Museum among many others.
Reni Gower is a Professor in the Painting and Printmaking Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. She has exhibited her work extensively nationally and internationally for over thirty years. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including ii Virginia for the Arts Projection Grants. Her piece of work is represented in the collections of the Library of Congress; Pleasant Company/Mattel, Inc; Media Full general, Inc; and Capital One. In addition to her teaching and painting do, Gower curates award winning traveling exhibitions.
Heather Harvey is an Banana Professor at Washington College. She received the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Professional Artist Fellowship 2009-2010 and was a young man at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts in 2003. She regularly exhibits her piece of work from coast to coast and is included in numerous public and private collections. She was the managing director of the Charles Harris Library Gallery 2008-2010 and recently co-curated the exhibition artnow:DC in Kohl Gallery at Washington College, Chestertown, MD.
Jeffrey Hirst has exhibited his piece of work throughout the U.s.a. since 1991. Notably information technology has been showcased at national venues including the Minneapolis Establish of Art and McLean Project for the Art, McLean, VA. Hirst received his MFA from Louisiana State Academy. He is a recipient of a 2009 Minnesota State Arts Board grant and his piece of work is in numerous public and private collections including Groovy River Free energy, Southern Graphics Council, and SAP America.
Laura Moriarty has participated in lectures and residencies worldwide, including the Ucross Foundation, Women's Studio Workshop, Frans Masereel Center-Belgium, and University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Her honors include two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants, grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the Crafts Brotherhood of New York State. In 2011, she was awarded a Us Artists Projects Grant to produce her first creative person'south book, Table of Contents. She lives and works in Rosendale, NY.
Jane Allen Nodine is a Professor and Managing director of the Curtis Harley Gallery at University of South Carolina Upstate where she serves as Assistant Chair of Fine Arts and Communication Studies. Notably, her piece of work has been exhibited at the Frist Center for Visual Arts, Mary Brogan Museum, Turchin Center, S Carolina Country Museum, and AlteKaserne Winterthur, Switzerland. Jane has received two South Carolina Arts Committee Fellowships and a NEA / SECCA Iv Fellowship.
